This dish was my first meal when I arrived in Japan for my second Japanese trip. I was staying at Hilton Nagoya and wanted to dine somewhere close that caters Nagoya specialities. I stumbled upon this place and it did not disappoint. I think it's a nagoya chain or a japanese chain so you can try the dish in other locations too.

I ordered the signature misonikomi udon dish with chicken and egg. Soup is flavourful, not spicy though the broth is surprisingly reddish. The udon is cooked al dente, the chicken tender, and egg is nice and fluffy. Oh how I missed japanese eegs cuz the farming, culture, and taste is so so much different from north American eggs. Definitely the dish to try when you're in nagoya and this restaurant too.

Misonikomi udon is one of the famous Nagoya dish and it was on my list to try.

This particular restaurant is located across from Nagoya Hilton hotel, i came here for lunch while in town.

If you order misonikomi udon, all you can eat pickles are complimentary. I didn't know until a lady near me requested more. Their pickles were very good, I especially liked their cucumber.

Ask for apron as udon is boiling hot and could make a mess on your clothes if you are not used to eating hot noodles.

Miso nikomi udon.... it was my first time, I added the famous Cochin chicken, chicken was good, flavor.... I think it is an acquired taste. I think this particular restaurant is famous for their miso nikomi udon but I guess I am not used to eating that kind of miso they used. Other customers seemed very pleased with it and they were busy despite of non-peak lunch hours.

I came and I tried. Checked off my list.

I tried the Miso Nikomi Udon at this lovely restaurant next door to Starbucks. It was my first time trying a local Nagoya dish like this and the price was in my opinion, about right for lunch. This however was for the basic Egg and Noodle Udon, without beef, chicken or special ingredients at a price of around 1000. Other options included chicken, beef, tripe and other delicious and perhaps seasonal flavors as well.

The flavor was incredible! The rich broth was full of flavor with what looked like cooked down onions and perhaps some other herbs and vegetables. Along with this meal came some cucumber, and cabbage that must have been pickled and also very tasty, a bowl of rice and some green tea.

Yamamotoya is one of popular restaurants specializing in Miso Nikomi Udon in Nagoya. Nagoya is particularly famous for its Miso Nikomi Udon, which is udon simmered in rich miso based soup in a clay pot.

Yamamotoya has a quite few different locations in Nagoya, but this particular one is right across from Hilton Nagoya. You might have to share a big table with strangers, depending on the time and a number of your party.

They have basic menu and seasonal menu. The very basic miso nikomi udon is a little under 1000yen. I ordered one of the fall menu, miso nikomi with 4 kinds of mushrooms. My noodle came in just the right temperature and well presented. The noodle was very al dente.

The bill was over 1600 yen for one bowl of udon and a side of free pickles, which is almost double price of regular udon. But if you want to try the Nagoya food and like miso flavored stuff, yamamotoya is not a bad option.

We finally located this restaurant in Nagoya under an office building. It took some sleuthing, (google maps in Japan is not the greatest) since there are a dozen places and the signs are not in English. A local woman pointed the way. However, we enjoyed our miso nikomi udon, a Nagoya specialty with delicious broth and thick tasty noodles.
The restaurants in Japan all seem to have smoking sections, and the smoke does drift around into the non smoking zones. There were booths, tables and a large communal table in the middle of the restaurant.
With 2 beers, 2 udons, and pickles, our tab came to 4,136 yen. A bit more expensive than some other places, but still unique. I would recommend this restaurant, which seems to be popular with the locals and business crowd.

I'm not an udon expert and this was my first time trying Nagoya-style Udon. The miso broth is quite a bit "stronger" than what I'm used to having as standard udon in North America. It was tastey though with several different flavours coming from meat and veggies, and the raw egg that cooks itself in the broth.

I wanted to get my review in for english speaking folks staying in the area. They have an english menu so you don't have to deal with the just the photos. Service was quick and fresh tasting so it's a good quick meal.

I had the recommended specialty, udon with chicken and egg. It was just ok.

The udon noodles were very al dente, not the soft, fluffy, and chewy udon texture I was hoping for. The soup stock was nice and thick, but the flavor was relatively empty compared to the other soup stocks I had in Kyoto. The chicken was tender, but not worth the markup in price (double), and there wasn't much of it in the soup. Also whatever flavor the chicken was supposed to have got lost in the dish ... It seemed like ordinary chicken thigh meat. The wait staff had an English menu, which had most of the lunch options on it, but not all. They also didn't offer me a bib, which I unfortunately didn't notice until the end of the meal. Because the soup is thick, if any of it gets on you, it really shows, so I recommend that you ask for one.

The meal came with picked vegetables and rice. Nice, but unnecessary.

I literally stopped in Nagoya specifically to try this dish, from this specific restaurant because it was recommended in my guide book. Frankly I was rather disappointed.
