Elm Hill is a great place to wander around wasting time.
A few years ago I had been in the church crypt here, with friends, having coffee and wandered off to look in the fantasy bookshop.
The area is medieval, pretty and quaint with little courtyards off it. Antique shops, craft and book shops etc. I wandered down a coutyard and there was a taxidermists shop. The door was open so I went in and looked around..no-one came and I left.
Back with my friends we got a taxi back to the uni and they told me there was no taxidermists????
Some time later I saw a book in a shop in Lincoln called Shadows in the Watchgate by Mike Jeffries. It was a spooky scary fantasy set in Elm Hill and with an evil taxidermist who lived there. I had a bit of a panic..my friends said there was no taxidermist soanyway eventually my cousin told me there was and she knew him. PHEW!
Elm Hill was also converted into the village of Wall and the bookshop became the pub in Neil Gaimans film Stardust.
Enchanting place and on a warm summer day explore..sit under the trees and dream. (read the book and see the film too) :0)))

Somewhere you will find in all the guide books, take yourself off the beaten track and visit old Norwich. The cobbles of Elm hill with their range of antique shops, galleries, and specialist shops are legendary. At the top you will find the Britons Arms, one of the oldest coffee shops in the city, and you may not know that the street was used in the film Stardust. Take time to browse, and investigate the little courtyards that lead off - including a lovely quaint tea shop tucked away - Elm Hill's fab secret!

Elm Hill was named after the beautiful Elm Trees, sadly they suffered from Dutch Elm disease in the 1970s but Elm Hill lives on and no visit to Norwich should be complete without it.

It's great to take a little walk down the cobbles. The easiest landmark to find near by is the Art School which is down St. Geroge Street. As you walk down to the main entrance turn to the right and walk through the arch way. When you are walking by the river turn to your right and head up a slight hill. To your left you will see the start of the trail.

Famously featured in the movie Star Dust. They transformed the street into a busy market place. They painted the facade of one building which can be seen here

There's still some documents from this event in the little art gallery.

When you get to the end of the street you can either visit the crypt coffee room or Th Glass House Pub.

There's no doubt Elm Hill is one of the prettiest parts of old Norwich. Surviving slum tear downs and war time bombings has gifted us a warren of cobbled streets and quaint shops. It's a perfect place to walk through on your way down to the cathedral and the river beyond. Coming back the other way you're a stones through from Cinema City and the gift shops of the lanes. And if you can't decide between city or river, stop into a pub, or if you have time the Elm Hill Brasserie for food.
Word to the wise though, wear flat shoes. Its cobbled lanes have seen many an ankle twist in an awkward manner

Elm Hill is in the Old part of Norwich and well worth a visit for anyone coming to the city. It is famous for its cobbled streets and antique shops. There is also a speciality coin and stamp shop and a couple of art galleries.
One of my favourite shops is the bear shop - selling traditional teddy bears - excellent if you are looking for a special present.

Visit John Olivers if you want your hair done by an excellent stylist, and if you want a drink and a bite to eat, then the Britons Arms at one end and Olives at the other end of Elm Hill are both worthy of a visit.

Elm Hill was used for one of the scenes in Stardust. It is quaint and old fashioned and a lovely street to wander down.

Probably the prettiest street in Norwich.

The Britons Arms tea room is worth a visit for their amazing cakes. The Bear Shop is also a nice place to visit (you'll never guess what they sell!).

There are galleries, antiques and even a taxidermists.

      Well worth a wander around.

A picturesque street that avoids being twee, despite the proliferation of antique shops. Plenty to look at as you wander down the cobbled streets, and an antique bookshop which is well worth a browse. One of the prettiest places in Norwich.

Probably one of the nicest areas in the whole of Norwich. Elm Hill is the kind of place perfect for an autumn day wander. The streets are quirky and cobbled, and every store is unique and interesting. As everyone will tell you, its featured in the movie Stardust, which sums up the atmosphere of the area perfectly. You won't be dissapointed.

One of the oldest streets in the city, I think. Completely cobbled, as was normal in those days. Very narrow footpath, so not suitable for mobility-impaired people. The oldest church in the city - SS Simon & Jude - is to be found at the lower end of the street. It has a lovely atmospheric feel to it as you walk down or up.

The film stardust featuring michelle pheiffer was filmed here. The bear shop and various tea shops such as olive are well worth a visit. Ladies make sure you dont wear heels. A must see if visiting norwich. Can end the tour by having a drink at delaneys.
