Sometimes world-class greatness escapes your notice especially when it's sitting in your backyard. The Princeton University Art Museum is such a place.

Sure, there's New York, Washington and Paris but the expanse and wondrous content of this extraordinary museum is both breathtaking and wholly unexpected. A visit is an essential detour on any visit to the campus. Correction - it is a compelling reason in and of itself to visit the area.

At the moment the museum is closed due to our omnipresent virus but make a point to come, it will be a visit long remembered.

I'm by no means an art expert. But I've been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and most of the other big names in North America. This one is pretty impressive for a University based museum.

The have a mixture of stuff through the ages. The lower galleries have ancient art from China, Rome, Japan, and the Americas. The upper galleries are mostly classical European and American art and some Modern work.

Collection is encyclopedic, from ancient to contemporary art, spanning many countries.
Keeps growing in quality and quantity.
Needs a major expansion to double galleries.
Presents some fabulous special exhibitions (check their website).
Needs to have a phone number on labels for visitors to call to hear discussion about select works.
Docents occasionally lead tours.
Free admission (so buy something in store).
Open throughout the year (when university is not in session and on weekends).

Fantastic museum! The collection is Met level. All in charming Princeton, no stress and lots to visit after.

I love this museum! Been here many times and never disappointed. The special exhibits change frequently enough you can be a regular visitor and not be bored. The regular exhibits are a good mix of European art. My favorite spot is the medieval gallery. It's small enough to not get museum fatigue but large enough for variety.

If you are an art history enthusiast or just looking for something else to do while wondering around Princeton, this museum is utterly wonderful.

I came here for the first time back in college when they had a special exhibition on Cyprus, where my family is from. It was beautifully done and kept me wandering from room to room for a few hours. I love museums and try to make a trip to one either in NYC or somewhere in Jersey at least twice a month but can never spend more than 3 or so hours at a time in one. I'll be the first to admit that it can be a bit stuffy. With that said, I made a point to return to the Princeton University Art Museum many times since my initial visit. They have such a thorough collection of artworks, everything from renaissance to contemporary. I've never felt like I actually completed the museum because every time I return, I find something new.

Princeton itself is such an amazing little town so, even though I really do love spending time in the galleries, I don't want it to consume my entire day. Luckily, admission is free (any kind of donation is of course appreciated) so I wholeheartedly recommend stopping by if only for an hour or so before continuing to enjoy the day and the area.

My wife and I were walking around Princeton's campus today, and we decided to check out the art museum. I was impressed by how large and varied the collections are - it's definitely a real museum!

First, admission is free, but the "recommended contribution" is $5 per person. For our first visit, we basically focused on the upstairs section, since we wanted to take it slow and not rush too much.

We saw a good variety of older European art as well as some modern pieces. I wouldn't say I was absolutely floored by anything, but it's definitely worthy of a few visits, and the special exhibit was pretty interesting. The gift shop was quite small, though - we were hoping to purchase a couple of items to commemorate the occasion, but there wasn't anything that called to us.

Overall, I definitely plan on coming back here!
