A Munich culinary institution. The food is classic, but with a touch of nouvelle here and there. Recently renovated, the atmosphere is cool, simple and classy.

As you'd expect, the wine list is top notch, sorted by appellation. So if you're not au fait French wine, download an app that you can check on the sly, or ask for a recommendation from your waiter.

      Speaking of waiters...

The service really distinguishes Rue des Halles. Though the atmosphere is casual, every move the staff makes remains perfectly in line with tradition. As Munich's oldest French restaurant, many of the city's most prominent maitres d' got their training here.

Good food, great service and great atmosphere. Had the foie gras as a starter which was excellent. As a main dish, chose the monk fish covered with sesame seed and saffron sauce. It was ok, but a bit too experimental for me.

The overall wine selection is good but they could improve a little on the Port Wine choice on the menu. It seemed to me that the Port Wine was bought from a supermarket last minute.

Lovely restaurant in a quiet neighborhood. We had rack of lamb and bouillabaisse that were both excellent. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. This is a little gem off the beaten touristy path

Stumbled upon this place on an August Saturday evening when many of the restaurants are taking holidays. We wanted to check out Bar Tapas Teatro just south of Rosenheimerpplatz but it's off till September so came back to this part of the town which in our view is the most charming as well as offering many culinary delights.

Very classical bistro yet with nice padded table cloth - 1 plus already as compared to say M-Belleville in Schwabing. Many people associate French restaurants in Munich with high prices but that is not true. On offer is a basic fixed menu of 25.50, a 3-course menu of your choice of dishes for 37(plus a trou normand in between) and a 4-course menu of chef's choice at 57. The menu feature many seafood dishes which is a nice departure from meat centric German repertoire. We ended up taking the second menu option and enjoyed the following dishes:
      - entree: baked goat cheese in filo on bed of salad, salmon and tune tartare with mint mouse: the baked goat cheese is perfect, filo wrapper kept the moisture of the cheese. The salad dressing is a bit too sweet to my taste but it could be to keep consistency with the caramelized pear on the cheese. The mint mouse could be a bit more airy but over all two great starters. The house white wine (from the southwest) goes quite well with the cheese even with its sweet pear.
      - main dishes: two fish dishes: Cabillaud with basil crust and whole sea bass with pastis flambee. Basil crust is quite interesting, and the sea bass is very fresh. Personally I love to eat whole fish as it's a more complete experience. Not sure what the flambee achieved in terms of taste but the bass is perfectly cooked with juicy flesh. Worth mentioning is the blanched vegetables and rice that comes with the fish. Very lightly flavored without overpowering the fish. Overall clean yet well defined tastes from both fish dishes.
      - dessert: we had the classical tarte tartin and the warm choco fondant cake in vanille cream. Despite not a fan of vanille sauce, my dining partner enjoyed his cake very much. The tarte tartin has a very nice fried crust but the creme fraiche that comes with it is a bit heavy(I know it's classical but still...).

      What we find good:
+ attentive service, esp if one speaks French then there is more of an information exchange during the ordering process which helps in the enjoyment of the food as well.
+ classical and comfortable setting, quiet and good for conversation; doesn't seem too crowded despite the high quality of food.
+ if clean and defined palete appeals to you then you will like the style of cooking
+ the right proportion: not sure why but two other French restaurants we had been on recommendation all have too big a serving size which doesn't always lead to more satisfaction with the whole meal. Perhaps more diners here place value on the size?
+ great value for the menu.

We will definitely be back and also recommend to anyone who enjoys well executed cuisine that respects the flavor of the produce. Bon Appetit!
