Wholly Cow Burgers, Rings & Things

Semi dysfunctional kitchen here. I order at 11:56am with three people ahead of me, I finally got my food at 12:25pm. I ordered a burger and fries, nothing super special and it sure as heck shouldn't take 30 minutes to get a burger.

I got my burger and I will say that there's nothing to be writing home about here. Mediocre at best has a weird seasoning on the fries and the burger. They do have really good bacon. Thumbs down.

Overall not a bad burger. It is slightly better than blue sky which I had earlier this week. I would recommend and thoroughly enjoyed their onion rings . The batter was very tasty and it was fried to the perfect crispness.

Service was very friendly and they kept checking if we needed drink refills.

I was craving a veggie burger so I thought I'd give this burger joint a try. At first I thought it was akin to the Wholly Cow in Austin. But that was silly. Austin and Abilene have virtually nothing in common except for being in Texas. It's just a local Abilene establishment.

However, a veggie burger was a menu option. I ordered it on a whole wheat bun with tomatoes, jalapeños and ranch. I was a little disappointed in the patty though. It's just a black bean patty, probably food service. It was decent but I prefer a homemade lentil patty.

I think the french fries were the best part. They aren't food service, and I tasted garlic salt and sugar on them. I also liked the tea variety (mango-my choice, sweet, unsweet, and half lemonade half tea). They also have Big Red from the fountain which is uncommon. They also have those utensil dispensers-designed to keep peoples hands off.

All in all, pretty good for Abilene.

Very cool mom and pop place with a friendly staff and awesome service.

The food: I had fried mushrooms which were pretty good but needed to be cooked 2 minutes longer. The breading was a little doughy on the inside.

As for the burger, the bun was amazing. I had the white bun which was slightly sweet but not as sweet as a Hawaiian roll. The veggies were fresh and crisp. The burger however seemed to be very low grade beef. It was tough and grisly. This place would be so much better off raising there price and serving better meat.

I would not get the burger again and concern would be for the quality or the other protein they serve. Too bad because this place was really cool.

AMAZING burgers. Just had the jalapeno bread single (they call it the half cow). Really good flavor! I'm a burger snob and this may be one of the best I've ever had. Seriously.


Nice, friendly staff. Decent prices. Even the fried food was really good and not too greasy. Are we coming back? Yes. On our way back through Abilene in two days.

Been going here since January of 2014 and they were good till recently. The meat in the burgers is smaller than Whataburgers meat now. They have now messed up our orders twice and the last time badly. When I called about the order being messed up, the manager on duty could not handle it and had to have the owner call me. 3 days later he calls, and acted rudely and did not seem to care. He didn't apologize or anything other than offering to only fulfill the messed up part of our order and didn't offer anything else. We never went back to even get that order corrected as we refuse to give them any more of our business and we went there often. We will now just use Whataburger or Heffs which has much better customer service and food.

This was a 1/2 a Cow below with a requested round bun (we have a person that doesn't like the other ones). Yeah, crazy.

Great place to get you're burger craving fix. Like the menu make you're own burger. The meat was Delish and they have some health option gluten free stuff.

The place is very clean. First thing you notice. Second thing is they don't begin cooking until you order. That makes it the freshest burger place so far for me.

I like this place. So many options to make your burger, and really good fries and onion rings! We'll be back.

I got so grossed out I will never eat there again.

I watched a guy with gloves on leave the kitchen, open the front door, go to his car, mess around in it, come back in, go to the kitchen, and continue to prepare food using the same gloves that just searched through his car - opened the filthy front door - and his car door!

GAG. I wondered if he had used the bathroom that day - dropped my burger in the trash - and left.
